A new study has discovered a new medical application of non – psychoactive component of the plant: the healing of bone fractures. The research, conducted in mice, found that the administration of the cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD), which represents around 40% of its extracts isolated from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the major psychoactive component, could significantly improve the healing process of the femur after only eight weeks.
The scientists found that receptors cannabinoids act within our body by stimulating bone formation and inhibited bone loss. In fact, not only it makes the bones stronger during healing, but improves the maturation of the collagen matrix, providing the basis for new bone mineralization. “After being treated with the CBD, curing bone will be harder to break in the future”, said the leader of the study.
This, in his view, paves the way for a promising future in the use of drugs with cannabinoids to combat osteoporosis and other bone – related diseases. “The clinical potential of compounds related to cannabinoids is undeniable at this time, ” he said. “Although there is still much work to be done in developing appropriate therapies, the principal agent in our study, the CBD, is an effective anti-inflammatory, ” he added.
